Sega Saturn Boot-Disk & Open/Close Switch Hey people, I saw a of people talking about the Boot-Disk for the Sega Saturn, and everybody seems to think it's useless as a copied cd-r. I tend to NOT agree! It was at these messageboards I learned about it and I was very interested (What if.
Could it work.and so on.) I roamed the Net for a copy and burned it. You were all right about it not eliminating the swapping, BUT you were also NOT. Of course you'll have to swap to let the Boot-Disk boot, but after that I can play most of my back-ups (Cd-r's) WITHOUT swapping!
This method is called Pseudo Saturn and what it is, is basically a modded Action Replay/GameShark/Memcard cartridge that will boot backup's and imports without using the swap trick and damaging discs. Things you will need. Action Replay or Gameshark 3in1/4in1 or memcard (Cheap on eBay). Atlus installer disc burned to CD-R. Sega Saturn Console (Any region). A real Saturn game of your country code (Jap/US/UK). Backup game burnt to a CD-R to test (Make your own or find on google) Disclaimer.
You will lose the save backup and cheat codes function of your Action Replay, Memcard or Gameshark. This basically turns those carts into a portable modchip. You will need to perform the swap trick once to boot the installer disc.
Files Atlus installer Steps. Unscrew the Sega Saturn console. Take lid off. Tape the lid switch located at the back left together so the Saturn thinks it's closed whilst the lid is off.

See, I already have a hard-modded Model 2 and actually use my 8MB AR for codes and extra storage. For those that don't already know, it can be used to play the very awesome Panzer Dragoon Saga! There's a simple that allows it to boot without the 'PLEASE REMOVE CARTRIDGE' message popping up.
All that being said, if I had an extra working Saturn in my possession, I would definitely use this custom firmware on my working extra AR. I'm perfectly capable of hard-modding another one, but I'd want to use PseudoSaturn just for the novelty, to be honest;) Either way, I thank you again for putting this whole guide together for the community here. We're the best group of Saturn fans on the net, bar none! I'm actually interested in looking through the firmware's source code to see if there are any useful features that I was capable of adding through my somewhat limited abilities. If anything ever comes of that endeavor, I'll obviously post about it here. Seriously, thanks for this.
Didn't even know this had been developed. I was actually just debating on selling my Saturn and trying to emulate, but didn't really want to. I only own a hand full of actual Saturn games, since they are next to impossible to find around here and eBay is mad expensive for most stuff. The rest of my games are burned and I have just been doing the swap trick, which is a pain to do every time you want to play something. I debated on modding it, but I just never got around to it. Going to try this soon and see how well it works. Any idea is this will work with a Memory Card Plus?
Or maybe one of the random Saturn memory cards that can be gotten cheap from Japanese dealers on eBay? I finally got around to trying this after I bought a Game Shark off eBay. Took forever to get here, I just got it last night. Anyway, I tried Atlus. At first it acted like it worked, but nothing really happened. I guess the write failed. So I tried it again, and it kept saying 'wrong firmware' and wouldn't overwrite anymore.
Sega Saturn
So I poked around and ended up finding cafealpha's flash utility. I got it here: Booted it up, flashed the Game Shark, worked perfectly.

So far, every backup I've thrown at it works fine. So thanks again for posting this. I can finally get some use out of my Saturn without the hassle of the swap trick.
