I'm in a 'bit of a pickle' as to Windows 7 (64 bit) and Rome Total War and if it should run OK. The game worked fine on my old XP machine but seems hit and miss on W7(64), esp some of the expansion packs. I have the old Activision RTW and that installs OK, and usually starts and runs OK. However, every so often it will crash. I can play for hours some times and its OK, others just for a few mins.
So I tried loading the RTW patches to get the game to 1.3. This is the first weird problem, the patch only seems to load into 'Program files' and not 'program files (x86)' but the game loaded into both. Q1 - should the patch load into both? Q2 Which version should I try to run RTW?, the one in program files, or the one in program files (x86)? Q3 Which, if any of the expansion packs should run? I have RTW - Barbarian Invasion (Sega), and RTW - Alexander (Sega/White Label).

Barbarian Invasion seemed to load but won't run (first of all it missed mss32.dll, which I found and copied in, but then) it said it couldn't start 3d Audio. Alexander says it cannot see the RomeTW.exe (1.5 or 1.6) which it needs to find before installing. I tried to install the 1.5 patch but it still said the same although the patch claimed to install OK. Is this related to the 1.3 patch query above I wonder? The versions of the patches I have are old, obtained for the XP machine.
Are there W7(64) specific patch versions I should be using? I have looked at but its not a lot of help (unless Ive missed something) as I cannot see RTW (Activision) at all, and it seems to suggest RTW Alexander (Sega) should be OK (but no mention of the white label verson) Sorry if this all seems a bit long and twisted, but I'd like to get at least some of the games running correctly and stable, and as of yet, I can't. Alternatively, is there a known guide on the www somewhere to explain how to install them on W7(64) and which patches to load and when? Thanks EDIT - Something I've just noticed is, if I put the RTW CD into the W7(64) machine and run the game from the pop-up menu, it also fails to start with 'unable to initialize 3D audio' (or to that effect). I was running the game from a short-cut that was created in the W7 start menu, that runs from the Program files (x86) version. And from this shortcut it starts and plays but sometimes crashes.
